Portugal ex-PM Jose Socrates held in tax fraud inquiry

Former Portugal Prime Minister Jose Socrates, 2005-2011 was arrested and detained by police as part of a corruption investigation on the 21 November 2014.

It followed a series of judicial cases hitting the country's political and economic elites, such as the BES bank scandal in July 2014 and the Golden Visas case which came to light just weeks before Mr Socrates was detained. None of the cases were apparently connected.
