The accession of ten new Member States to the European Union means that some deprived regions will no longer qualify for its lucrative funding. Provisional figures released by the European Commission on 18 February 2004 show that the depressed economy of West Wales has declined and that of Merseyside has improved only slightly in recent years despite being awarded hundreds of millions of pounds of Objective One funding.
