Russia has acknowledged Viktor Yanukovich as winner of Ukraine's disputed presidential election on 21 November 2004. However, the United States and European Union have condemned the poll as fraudulent and have given implicit support to Viktor Yushchenko, the opposition candidate. Supporters of Mr Yushchenko have been encouraged by him to take to the streets in protest. |
