Further information: After a long debating period, the Parliament adopted on 20 December 2017 a draft law which includes setting up a single body to fight corruption, bringing together several agencies. The bill also broadens the list of high-level officials whose income, property and conflict-of-interest declarations would be scrutinised by the new body. However, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev announced his veto to the draft law on 2 January 2018 due to its potential lack of efficacy. He argued that the bill would not be independent and could be used to persecute political opponents. On 12 January, the Parliament overturned the President's veto and confirmed the draft law. + Report on progress in Bulgaria under the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism, November 2017 Reports on the passing by Bulgaria's Parliament of a law aimed at improving its fight against high-level corruption and later vetoed by the country's President. |
