UEFA President Michel Platini confirmed on the 28 May 2015 that European football federations would be supporting HRH Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein at the FIFA presidential election in Zurich on the 29 May 2015, because 'enough is enough' given the events of the previous days where various international football representatives were arrested pending an extensive investigation into corruption and racketeering within Fifa. Russian president Vladimir Putin - whose country was given the hosting rights of the World Cup in 2018 by FIFA - criticised the United States for its attempts to extend its influence and sovereignty outside its borders by forcing this kind of investigation. Late on the 29 May 2015 it was announced that Sepp Blatter had been re-elected president of Fifa. However, on the 2 June 2015 Mr Blatter said he was stepping down as president of Fifa. However, some commentators noted that Mr Blatter remained in charge of Fifa and that the timing of an election to replace him was unclear. |
