POLISH opera star Malgorzata Walewska made a special appearance in Brussels this week to celebrate her country's upcoming accession to the EU.

The acclaimed mezzo-soprano, who shared the limelight with renowned tenor Dariusz Stachura and the Grand Opera Theatre Orchestra of Lodz, treated an audience of diplomats to a memorable performance at the city's Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie. In contrast, her country's politicians have not been nearly as successful at impressing Brussels, judging from the latest report by the European Commission on Poland's readiness for enlargement. The study, published yesterday (5 November), pointed to serious weaknesses in Poland's food safety laws and financial controls.
