The Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament voted on the 17 December 2012 on a proposal to help fight terrorism and serious crime by making the EU database of asylum seekers' fingerprints Eurodac available to national law enforcement authorities.

However, the European Commission proposal has generated controversy among human rights organisations, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and some MEPs.
