DENMARK was due to be confirmed as the temporary home of the new European police college today (28 February).

It will train officers in the undercover crime-fighting and intelligence-gathering techniques needed to combat organised crime as well as providing language classes.

Seven member states - Austria, France, Italy, UK, Germany, Netherlands and Spain - are keen to offer a permanent home to the college, but EU leaders have so far failed to agree on a location.

Interior ministers meeting in Brussels were expected to choose Copenhagen as its interim base.

The college will have a budget of €2.3 million this year and will initially comprise of a network of national police schools. Many member states, however, are keen to set up a bricks-and-mortar college as soon as possible.

Denmark is due to be confirmed as the temporary home of the new European police college on 28 February 2002.
