Date: 28/02/02 By DENMARK was due to be confirmed as the temporary home of the new European police college today (28 February). It will train officers in the undercover crime-fighting and intelligence-gathering techniques needed to combat organised crime as well as providing language classes. Seven member states - Austria, France, Italy, UK, Germany, Netherlands and Spain - are keen to offer a permanent home to the college, but EU leaders have so far failed to agree on a location. Interior ministers meeting in Brussels were expected to choose Copenhagen as its interim base. The college will have a budget of €2.3 million this year and will initially comprise of a network of national police schools. Many member states, however, are keen to set up a bricks-and-mortar college as soon as possible. Denmark is due to be confirmed as the temporary home of the new European police college on 28 February 2002. |
