Greece reached a preliminary deal on the 13 July 2015 after a weekend of frantic negotiations in Brussels for a third multi-billion euro bailout from its fellow members in the 19-country eurozone. The deal would include tough economic measures that Greece would need to pass into law quickly before it could get any new loans. The measures went beyond the proposals rejected by the Greece people in a referendum held on the 5 July 2015. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had the task of securing the agreement in the Greek Parliament to the new tougher measures by the end of 15 July 2015. Before the vote took place, an IMF report was leaked which defended a massive debt restructuring exercise. This report followed and complemented another one released some weeks before. Members of Mr Tsipras' own Syriza group opposed parts of the agreement, as did many Greek citizens. On 15 July 2015, the Greek parliament approved the bailout package. While the pro-EU opposition voted in favour of the proposal, dozens of Syriza's MPs voted against it. According to analysts, this situation put into question the future of the Greek government. Outside the parliament, protests resulted in violence, with some demonstrators being injured and many others detained. |
