Background and further information: Members of the Parliament argued the Commission had exceeded its mandate by proposing to exempt from the identification criteria a set of substances which are designed to attack an organism's endocrine system. The Commission proposal - put forward in June 2016 - relates to the scientific criteria for identifying endocrine-disrupting properties of chemical substances. The identification of these scientific criteria is a first step towards measures reducing their presence and protecting citizens’ health. The PAFF Committee, comprising representatives from the Member States, endorsed the draft set of criteria on 4 July 2017. The European Parliament's plenary session decided on 4 October 2017 to block a proposal put forward by the European Commission which would have exempted some chemicals in pesticides from being identified as endocrine disruptors. |
