The Catalan President, Artur Mas, argued on the 5 September 2013 that 'plebiscite-style' elections should be held in 2016 – when the current term of government finished – if the Spanish government did not allow an independence referendum to take place in 2014. In an interview with Catalan radio, Mas said he aimed to finish the term and would prefer not to have to call early elections. Mas was waiting for an answer from the Spanish government about the possibility of organising a referendum in 2014.
