Anti-fraud Commissioner Anita Gradin this week called on member states to increase their efforts to tackle corruption as she issued a communication outlining areas where she felt national governments could do more to combat the problem. Last September, all 15 EU member states signed a protocol outlawing corruption by officials handling Union funds as well as attempts to corrupt them. But the protocol forms part of the 1995 fraud convention which has yet to be ratified by national parliaments because of disagreements over the role of the European Court of Justice in interpreting the agreement.
