THE plane-spotters accused of spying in Greece are appealing to the European Union to pressurise Athens into ensuring a fair trial when their hearing resumes.

The 14, arrested in November, now face a lesser charge of obtaining national secrets.

They were bailed last month and allowed to return to their homes in the UK and Netherlands after six weeks in jail.

British MEP Richard Howitt, campaigning on their behalf, said: 'We are calling on the EU to ensure that Greece meets the minimum standards of justice in this case.'
