Summary: The 11th Congress of the Party of European Socialists (PES) was held in Lisbon, on 7-8 December 2018. The meeting aimed at renewing party resolutions and discuss common position on the different challenges facing the European Union. Delegates at the Congress also endorsed a Common Candidate ahead of the 2019 European Parliament election. Further information: At the meeting, Frans Timmermans was endorsed as the socialists' Common Candidate for the forthcoming European elections, confirming the support gathered earlier in the year. The Congress discussed a set of challenges facing the European Union and the response by the centre-left in this framework as many of these parties faced questions over their future in many countries across Europe. The PES President Sergei Stanishev and the PES Women President Zita Gurmai were both re-elected. |
