Austria’s Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Michael Spindelegger resigned on the 26 August 2014, after persistent criticism from his People's Party (ÖVP).

The ÖVP had been locked in a battle with its senior coalition partner, Chancellor Werner Faymann's SPÖ, over how to finance income tax cuts to give a boost to the economy.

Economics Minister Reinhold Mitterlehner became Austria's new vice chancellor and the leader of the conservative People's Party (ÖVP).
