President Nicolas Sarkozy was made acutely aware of the power of France’s trade unions on the 18 October 2007 when utility workers switched off the lights at his private residence as part of their contribution to a 24-hour national transport strike. Trade Unions claimed a big victory in their protest against proposed reforms to the special pension schemes for transport and power workers. Record numbers of rail, bus and power workers stayed away, with the level of support running at almost 74 per cent in the state rail monopoly SNCF.
