A European Parliament regulatory committee urged European Union regulators on 8 October 2002 to consider that journalists are already subject to self-regulation when drawing up new rules - known as the Market Abuse Directive - on insider dealing. The move should make it harder to impose tough new requirements on the media. The European Publishers' Council has opposed the proposed legislation, warning it could subject journalists to the control of financial regulators.
