Date: 26/07/01 ITALY has stepped up its ham-and-cheese offensive to win the new European Food Authority for Parma, amid signs of flagging support for early favourite Helsinki. With Genoa's G8 summit out of the way, Parma's inter-ministerial campaign committee has been told that the bid has become one of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's top priorities. Renato Ruggiero has written to fellow EU foreign ministers extolling the city's virtues. President of the Province Andrea Borri said: "We have a specialised institute for food technology. That will help the food authority to operate in a favourable environment."
