A French police officer was killed and two others injured in the evening of 20 April 2017 after an alleged terrorist shooting on the Champs Elysées in Paris just days before the first round of the presidential election on the 23 April 2017. The suspected attacker was killed by security forces. In a statement President Francois Hollande said that he was convinced the attack was 'terrorist-related'. So-called Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility. The incident took place as the candidates were taking part in the third and final live tv campaigning programme. France had suffered a number of terrorism-related incidents over the previous few years. President François Hollande and second round 2017 presidential election candidates Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen took part in a cermony to commemorate policy officer Xavier Jugele on the 25 April 2017. |
