In the run-up to European Union membership talks with Turkey (due to begin on 3 October 2005), French President Jacques Chirac said on 26 August 2005 that Turkey needed to recognise Cyprus and Angela Merkel, widely expected to become German Chancellor in Parliamentary Elections on 18 September 2005, reiterated her demand that Turkey should settle for a 'privileged partnership' short of full membership.
