The EU supports a water project in South Africa which, by opening up a local well, has saved women from having to walk eight kilometres from their village to fetch clean water. The women on the Limpopo River can now wash properly and have time to grow their own produce, for themselves and for sale. The villagers now have time to discuss how they want to develop their settlement. This is how sustainable development starts. For these women the outcome of the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development is important Margot Wallström is European Commissioner for the Environment and Poul Neilson is European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid. |
