The United Kingdom: Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) launched a consultation process on the 10 May 2018 focusing on Environmental Principles and Governance after EU Exit. DEFRA was seeking views on how a new environmental watchdog to be set up after Brexit would work, and on the application of environmental principles in England. Further information When the United Kingdom left the EU in 2019, the UK Government claimed that the country would be able to build on the successes achieved through EU membership, and address the failures, to become a world-leading protector of the natural world. The Government had already published the 25 Year Environment Plan in January 2018, which set out the Government’s ambition for this to be the first generation that left the environment in a better state than that in which it inherited it. These good intentions must be underpinned by a strengthened governance framework that supported environmental protection measures and created new mechanisms to incentivise environmental improvement. |
