Date: 26/06/1997 Kohl, in fact, had been niggled since being confronted with his summit gift - a new bike - on the way to lunch earlier in the day. He had made it clear before the summit started that he was not pedalling for anyone, but the Amsterdam authorities sprung the bikes on the leaders and a few could not resist the photo opportunity. The biggest concern of the organisers was that the bikes' wheels might get caught in tram tracks and pitch some poor politician over the handlebars. But the waiting cameramen were disappointed. |
