Date: 02/10/1997 New Latvian Prime Minister Guntars Krasts seems to be finding it hard to keep track of all the Euro-friends he has acquired since taking office. Following a recent trip to Brussels, Krasts announced that he had met “Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene, European Commission President Jacques Santer and ... and ... uuh ...”. A somewhat flustered Krasts turned to his adviser for help, but to no avail, leaving the premier with no option but to press on with a detailed explanation of Latvia's case for EU membership. But halfway through, Krasts broke off to announce: “I remember now. It was the head of Europol.” But his memory promptly failed him again. “Mr ... umm ...” he muttered, before finally admitting defeat. For the record, Mr umm is better known as Jürgen Storbeck. |
