SUSPECTED fraud involving almost €5 million worth of EU funding to Kosovo is being investigated by the European anti-fraud office, OLAF.

The probe has been triggered by information received by OLAF that money earmarked for the electricity sector in the war-ravaged region was misused.

OLAF spokesman Alessandro Butticé said his office will liaise closely with the European Agency for Reconstruction, which is based in Thessaloniki, Greece, and the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.

Both have agreed to cooperate with the enquiry, he added. Butticé said he was precluded from commenting further until the investigation has been completed.
