A tanker carrying 70,000 tonnes of industrial fuel split in two and sank off the north-west coast of Spain on 19 November 2002, threatening one of the world's worst oil spills. A diplomatic row between Spain and Britain has blown up with the Spanish Government claiming the ship was en route to Gibraltar. The Spanish Prime Minister, José Maria Aznar, accused Gibraltar of failing to comply with European Union Directives on inspecting maritime vessels.
