His farewell visit to Europe first took him to Athens, where he described Greece as the birthplace of democracy and called for debt relief for the country. He then travelled Berlin on the 16 November 2016 and met with Chancellor Merkel. The Chancellor and President agreed that the European Union and the USA should continue their efforts to finalise a trade agreement, but they were also in agreement that globalisation needed a human face. Climate and security policy, and common values in foreign policy were other points on their agenda. Commentators discussed what kind of world Obama was leaving behind after eight years as US president. On the 18 November 2016 German Chancellor Merkel hosted a meeting between President Trump and the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The issue of maintaining sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine and Syria was said to be high on the agenda. |
