Reports of visit by US President Barack Obama to Tallinn on the 3 September 2014 for talks with the presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on Russia and the Ukraine crisis. The three states, formerly part of the Soviet Union, which joined Nato in 2004, were said to be worried about Russia's intervention in Ukraine. The New York Times said that the visit by the US President was aimed at reinforcing the fact that the United States and Europe within NATO were serious about defending them from a newly aggressive Russia. President Obama was on his way to the NATO Summit, Wales, 4-5 September 2014 to discuss challenges facing the organisation with other NATO leaders. |
