Centrica, the only British company in the running to build a new generation of atomic power plants, has threatened to pull out in April 2012 due to uncertainty over the UK government’s energy policy – a move that could imperil the country’s nuclear renaissance. Centrica joined a growing number of energy companies that were cooling on nuclear power, a process that accelerated after the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan. A few weeks earlier, two German utilities, Eon and RWE, had announced they were selling their joint venture to build atomic power plants in Britain. |
