Northern Ireland’s Snap Assembly Elections: Outcome and Implications

The Congressional Research Service, a department of the Library of Congress, conducts research and analysis for Congress on a broad range of national and international policy issues. Some of the CRS work is carried out specifically for individual members of Congress or their staff and is confidential. Note that many reports are periodically updated.2 March 2017 saw voters in Northern Ireland vote in snap Assembly elections. The assembly is a key institution of the devolved government that was established by the 1998 Belfast agreement to end the sectarian conflict that lasted for over 30 years. This report analyses the results of the elections and their implications for the stability of the political situation in Northern Ireland.
