Date: 30/10/1997 THE European Parliament recently made the following observation as part of the EU institutions' contribution to the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. “Europe's ideals have always granted a special place to the poor, who are seen as drawing attention to society's failings and thus pointing towards the creation of a fairer and better world.” In other words, MEPs seem to be saying the poor are special in Europe as they remind us that people are poor. Is this really cause for continental self-congratulation? |
