Date: 21/11/02 NO DISCIPLINARY action will be taken against a top EU official who wrote an unauthorised letter to a newspaper, backing Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's assertion that 95% of Turks are not European. Corrado Pirzio-Biroli, chief advisor to Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler, claimed Giscard was right to cast doubt on Ankara's prospect of joining the Union as 'even Russia has a far larger European element than Turkey'. A Commission source said Pirzio-Biroli had expressed regret about writing the letter, which gave the Commission as his address. He would not have breached the rules if it had been sent from his home address. Meanwhile, the Commission has banned staff from circulating unsolicited emails after a message highlighting an anti-war protest was sent to every terminal in the institution. |
