Following the terrorist attack in Nice on Bastille Day, 14 July 2016, the third major terrorist attack in France in 18 months, commentators noted the breakdown in solidarity between political factions in the country and between French citizens and their government. An IFOP poll published on the 1 July 2016 in Le Figaro suggested that two thirds of the French did not trust the government to effectively fight terrorism. On the same day French Prime Minister Manuel Valls was booed in Nice after participating in a minute’s silence in honour of the victims of the attack. With a Presidential election in 2017 politicians on the right such as Nicolas Sarkozy, Alain Juppé and Marine Le Pen began to openly criticise the Socialist government of President Hollande as being weak and ineffective. The french government said on the 19 July 2016 that it was open to considering 'conditions' set by conservative opposition party Les Républicains for its agreement on extending the country’s state of emergency, which was announced by President Hollande in the aftermath of the Nice attack. |
