The steel industry is going through a period of profound change in central and eastern Europe as countries prepare the sector, and their economies in general, for European Union membership. This entails closing inefficient production facilities and increasing productivity, just as the existing Member States did in the 1980s, with the aim of completing the vast bulk of restructuring by the end of 2006.
