Turkey's political and military leaders began their annual four-day meeting 1 August 2006 amid signs that the often fractious relationship between the government, with its roots in political Islam, and the staunchly secular armed forces is about to become a little less congenial. A new and hawkish chief of the general staff, General Yasar Buyukanit, was appointed on 31 July 2006, setting the tone for the meeting of the supreme military council (YAS) that will mark the relationship between Turkey's political and military elites for the next two years.
