New EU initiatives and programmes: Reform of the Structural Funds. An important stage in the process of creating the new Structural Fund legislation for the period 2000-2006 was reached with the agreement on the overall Agenda 2000 proposals at the European Council in Berlin on 25.3.99. The European Parliament and the Council will still need to legally adopt the formal legislative proposals, which it is hoped will occur in the coming months to allow for the new rules to come into force on 1.1.2000. |
