Under the so called Status Law, passed by the Hungarian Parliament in June 2001, from January 2002 on, ethnic Hungarians in neighbouring countries will be entitled to childcare, education, healthcare and employment rights funded by Hungary. Affected countries, such as Romania have complained both to Hungary and the European Union about the legislation, claiming that the law discriminates unfairly against their non-Hungarian citizens.
