Summary:

A meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government was held from 3 to 4 December 2019, in London, United Kingdom. The meeting was chaired by the NATO Secretary General and attended by leaders of the NATO member states. The summit marked the 70th anniversary of the Alliance.

Further information:

The summit took place amid signs of discord within the military alliance. Concerns was raised in October about Turkey’s military offensive in northern Syria, while French President Emmanuel Macron deplored a lack of U.S. leadership and decried NATO as brain dead. Most of NATO members rejected Macron’s criticism of alliance and US President Donald Trump declared that the description of NATO as brain dead was insulting.

The meeting ended also amid political tension as a video posted on Twitter by Canada's public broadcaster, CBC, showed Canadian's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chatting with a group of other leaders and appeared to mocked President Donald Trump. As a response, the US President canceled a press conference and left NATO summit earlier.

Notwithstanding, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on the last day of the meeting that NATO remains unified in its commitment to collective defense. NATO members took also important decision regarding the future of NATO. They focused on burden-sharing, the rise of China and security of telecommunications infrastructure with 5G networks.
