Date: 13/06/1996 Pauline Green, leader of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, was chatting in Dublin last week to Ireland's European Affairs Minister Mr Mitchell about how his country will handle the continuing crisis over British non-cooperation because of the BSE dispute. She suggested that if the problem dragged on, it would require an acronym. Would it not be rather fitting, she said, if, with Mr Mitchell in charge of European matters, it were to be called the Policy Of Non-Cooperation in Europe, or PONCE for short? Mr Mitchell laughed heartily at the MEP's commendable sense of humour: his Christian name is Gay. |
