A new game of 'Name the Next Commissioners' is now in full swing. Anyone can play and you can list as many names as you like between now and the autumn.

Every political upheaval in the EU's 15 member states releases more potential candidates, the latest being Paddy Ashdown, the departing leader of the UK's Liberal Democrat Party. His name has also been raised as a potential British nominee for the new job of EU High Representative for foreign and security policy.

Ashdown is a committed pro-European, a friend of Premier Tony Blair and, as a former British commando, would love to be involved in the development of EU defence and security policy.

Since Transport Commis-sioner Neil Kinnock looks certain to stay, a decision to nominate Ashdown to the Commission would leave a questionmark over the future of former Conservative minister and Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten, who had been widely tipped to become the UK's second European Commissioner.
