- Hansjörg Kretschmer is to head the European Commission’s delegation in Afghanistan. He was formerly the head of the Commission’s delegation in Turkey, where he will be replaced by Marc Pierini, who is currently head of delegation in Tunisia.
- Leonard Orban has been nominated as Romania’s European commissioner-designate after the withdrawal of the candidacy of Varujan Vosganian. Commission President José Manuel Barroso has proposed that he take charge of multilingualism and put forward his name to the European Parliament, along with that of Bulgarian candidate Meglena Kuneva, who is proposed as commissioner for consumer protection. MEPs will hold hearings for the nominees on 27 November and hold a vote in the second week of December. The final appointment rests with the Council of Ministers.
- Julian von Fumetti has joined consultants GPlus Europe as an account executive. He was a previously a political adviser in the office of German Socialist MEP Erika Mann.
- Paola Schweitzer has joined the international department of the Royal College of Nursing, the professional association of the UK’s nurses, as European officer. She previously worked as European and international officer for Bristol City Council.
- Bulgaria’s President Georgi Parvanov has been re-elected, winning over 75% of the vote in a second round run-off on Sunday (29 October).
