Russia indicated on the 14 August 2008 that it was prepared to break up Georgia. The Russian-backed leaders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia announced they would push for total independence from Tbilisi.

George W. Bush, US president, signalled that the break-up of Georgia or the loss of its sovereignty was unacceptable to the US.
