Moldova’s pro-European orientation received a boost in December 2010 after pro-western parties agreed to form a three-party coalition in an attempt to overcome more than a year of political deadlock. Vladimir Filat became the Prime Minister.

The agreement signed on the 30 December 2010 enables the Alliance for European Integration to retain its hold on power, thwarting the hopes of the Communist party, which won the most votes in recent national elections.

However, the accord does not guarantee an end to the political stalemate in the former Soviet republic as the new coalition still lacks sufficient votes to elect a president.
