From 7 April to 12 May 2014, the world’s largest democracy, India, will hold parliamentary elections. Indian citizens want higher economic growth and development, more participatory politics and an end to corruption. Around 815 million eligible voters can choose from some 1,616 political parties, but Narendra Modi, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is widely touted to become the next Indian prime minister. Because this election is mainly about change – in leadership, in political discourse, and in general attitudes and aspirations – India's 2014 elections look set to be Modi's moment. |
