Openness and transparency: Judgment in Swedish journalists case:
The European Court of First Instance has annulled, on the ground of an inadequate statement of reasons, the Council of the European Union's decision to refuse access to certain documents relating to Europol requested by the Swedish journalists' organisation Svenska Journalistförbundet (SJU).

SJU had decided in 1995 to test the way in which the Swedish authorities applied Swedish citizens' right of access to information contained in documents relating to the EU. It applied to Swedish national authorities for twenty Council documents relating to the setting up of the European Police Office (Europol) and it applied to the Council for the same twenty documents. The Swedish authorities granted access to eighteen of the documents, while the Council initially only granted access to two documents, and later to two more. SJU brought an action against the Council.
