Ministerial Meeting between the EU and Mexico, Panama, 12.02.98

In the context of the VIIIth Ministerial Meeting of the EU and the Rio Group an informal meeting at ministerial level between the Troika of the European Union and Mexico was held in Panama on 12 February 1998.

During this meeting, Ministers welcomed the signature of the EU-Mexico Agreements on 8 December 1997 which marked the culmination of over two years preparatory work and close collaboration. They also welcomed progress in the ratification procedures within the European Union and Mexico.
Ministers expressed their satisfaction with progress on preparatory work with a view to the negotiation of the trade liberalisation in the terms foreseen in these Agreements. They looked forward to the completion of this phase of work under the UK Presidency of the Council of the European Union paving the way for a first round of talks in the second half of 1998.
