Trafficking in migrants has become a global problem that affects a complex matrix of origin, transit and destination countries, their international relations, security and economies. A leading publication in the field of trafficking literature based on systematic research and analysis is presented in two main parts: the systematic review of the literature on migrant trafficking in Europe and three case studies on trafficking and people smuggling from Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. Part I includes discussion of the concepts of 'trafficking' and 'smuggling', the availability of data on the scale of trafficking, trafficking routes, characteristics of trafficked migrants and how trafficking is organised. Part II describes in detail the three case studies, based on extensive interviews with migrants and the representatives of the main agencies in these countries that are responsible for combating migrant trafficking and people smuggling.

The editors are Frank Laczko and David Thompson.
