Merkel rebuffs Sarkozy on Mediterranean plan

Report of comments by German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaking to the ruling UMP Party in France, 30 January 2008. While agreeing with the French line on offering Turkey a 'privileged partnership' relationship with Turkey, she stressed that the future stability of the Mediterranean region affected the whole European Union and that all 27 EU Member States should be involved in the engagement process.
