MEPs summon UK’s Hill to second hearing

Report of the Hearing for European Commissioner-Designate Jonathan Hill by the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament, Brussels, 1 October 2014.

Following the meeting it was announced that Lord Hill would be called back for a second hearing on the 7 October 2014 as some MEPs felt he did not have a sufficient grasp of the detail of his portfolio covering Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union.

As Mr Hill took on his position as European Commissioner, he warned that he and his EU colleagues needed to stand above the pursuit of national interest or risk driving the bloc apart. The statement followed the rising tension between the UK, Germany and the European institutions.
