Date: 28/03/1996 Euro MPs have set a new and highly-unenviable record - the longest-ever sitting of the Strasbourg Parliament. The cause was the preparations for the IGC, which produced a day of nearly 15 hours of debate, argument and voting. The session started at 8 am and finished at 0.45 am. Parliamentary officials who claim there is nothing unusual in that are deluding themselves - normally it only feels that long. More records were chalked up on that memorable 13 March. Even the length of the lunch break was a world-beater - just 20 minutes instead of the usual two hours. There were also a record number of roll-call votes (98) and Parliament Vice-President Georgios Anastassopoulos notched up a fourth record by chairing a three-hour, 45-minute night session of the plenary. |
